Thermoset Composite Materials

A thermoset material refers to the resin based system. Once the resin has been curved and the reaction has occurred, the part is forever rigid and cannot be reheated or reformed.

Within Modern Composites, we are using a range of thermoset materials. The traditional wet resin systems where we take the fabric materials and wet them out, then layup over a mold shape and cure with temperature and time is one process.

Another process we are using is “pre-preg” composites where the resin is already mixed together with the fabrics (carbon or glass). We then take the material, cut to shape and put over a mold and cure with temperature.

We are also using vacuum bag processes for other parts where the application requires this technic.

In general, the thermoset curing type is longer and the process is normally used for lower volume product cycles.
