“ODL®” Carbon Material

“ODL” Carbon Material – “Omni Directional Layered” Carbon Material is a process developed internally by Modern Composites.

This involves taking biaxial unidirectional carbon fiber pre-preg material, laying the material up over a Omni directional shape mold. A large number of layers of the UD carbon are used, typically for a watch case consisting of over 150 layers.

This material is pressed under extremely high pressure and temperature, and cured for an extended prior of time to form a solid block of carbon material – internally knows as – “ODL” carbon.

The block is then CNC machined to the exact final shape, with the end effect creating a totally unique pattern of carbon, which gives an appearance of wood grain, while maintaining the light-weight and high strength properties of carbon fiber.

Further to the traditional black carbon appearance, Modern Composites is developing our ODL carbon to add tint effects of color within the black carbon layers.

This “ODL” process is unique to Modern Composites and further enhances the company’s product offering to the market.
